Community-based health providers around the country are using funds from the federal stimulus bill to expand their staff sizes, in many cases adding new medical assistants to their roster.

According to a report in the News-Press newspaper of Fort Myers, the state of Florida alone stands to gain about $17.6 million for its community health centers.

A number of the state's Family Health Center locations will be adding new doctors as well as medical assistants to the staff, boosting the quality of local care in the process. The facilities serve a large population of lower-income residents regardless of their ability to pay.

With the current state of the economy, one local healthcare executive predicted these centers would only become more important for many residents.

Even before the federal stimulus bill passed, the government was expecting a significant increase in demand for medical assistants in the coming years. The Bureau of Labor Statistics has predicted a 35 percent jump in demand for medical assistants between 2006 and 2016, due to things like new healthcare technologies and the aging of the population.
