Some students who recently completed medical assisting and other programs at Everest College in Washington will now get to make a difference for others after overcoming major obstacles in their own lives.
This week, Everest College highlighted five winners of its Dream Award, which honors students who have overcome great personal obstacles to further their education. The students each receive a $2,500 scholarship to Edison.
"Many of our students overcome difficult challenges in striving to get an education. These Dream Award winners exemplify the very best outcome of a career college education, proving that with commitment and support, anything is possible," Randy Rogers of Everest College said in a statement.
Of the five announced award winners, three were graduates of the Everest medical assistant training program. Lesa Taylor-McCabe now works in a physician's office in her home town of Bremerton, Washington, Darrell Humphrey works for an urgent care facility in Seattle, and Tanya Burgess works at a local bone and joint center.
Along with overcoming great obstacles, the three also help illustrate the different kinds of healthcare career paths a medical assisting degree can provide.
