Healthcare leaders at the local level remain optimistic that their industry offers a variety of career opportunities even as the rest of the job market continues to struggle.

This week, the Record newspaper of Stockton, California spoke with three local healthcare leaders about career prospects and other issues.

"Even if more people go to school for health care jobs, I still think there will be job opportunities," Corwin Harper of Kaiser Permanente told the newspaper.

Another professional, Donald Wiley, the CEO of St. Joseph's Medical Center, said that despite somewhat lower revenue this year, he believes that healthcare is a relatively recession-proof industry. He cited a soon-to-be-completed patient pavilion project that will add new beds to his facility while creating 130 new jobs.

Healthcare jobs are attractive for a variety of reasons, perhaps most notably their stability. If you are interested in launching your own career in the industry, one way to get started may be to train as a medical assistant.

Working as a medical assistant will place you in a field where your skills are in demand and where you will have considerable opportunities to build on the experience you acquire.
