Training as a medical assistant has helped people of ages and their families by giving them new skills and career opportunities.

One recent example is 51-year-old Janet Lane of Schaumberg, Illinois, who was recently featured in the state's Daily Herald newspaper. With help from the Women's Program at nearby Harper College, Lane was able to begin studying to become a medical assistant with an eye on eventually moving on to manage a medical office.

"I wanted to get myself back on track. I thought, I'd love to do something interesting with my life," Lane was quoted as saying.

The newspaper noted that Lane has a 3.87 grade point average and has made the dean's list three times as she works toward her medical assistant certificate and degree in applied science. In the past, she reportedly worked as a phlebotomist.

If you are interested in training as a medical assistant, you may find that it's one of the best career moves you can make. Medical assistants are in demand, even in the recession, and can use their skills to move on to a variety of other new opportunities in the healthcare industry.
