Cephas Mujuruki didn't expect to end up working as a medical assistant when he moved to the U.S., but his year at the Fourth Street Clinic in Salt Lake City has been more rewarding than he ever hoped, according to an article in the Salt Lake Tribune.

"This place is exactly what I was looking for," Mujuruki told the news provider.

Mujuruki said he was inspired to pursue a career in the medical field by U.S. aid doctors working in his native Zimbabwe, according to the Tribune. After moving to the U.S., he sought experience of any kind in the medical field, and found it in the clinic, which provides health care to the homeless.

According to the article, he hopes one day to return to Zimbabwe and help his fellow countrymen, who are in the grip of a cholera epidemic. Mujuruki explained that he grew up in a town of only 5,000 people who were visited once a week by the single doctor available.

Medical assistants are often inspired by a desire to give back to their communities. If you want to help, this may be your cue to look into pursuing a degree to start a medical assistant career.
