Modern Healthcare has named Mary Kay Henry, a former medical assistant and now international executive vice president of the Service Employees International Union, one of its top 25 women in healthcare.
The article describes Henry as on the frontline of the healthcare crisis. She has negotiated agreements with groups like Kaiser Permanente for her members, and is trying to professionalize home care workers in more states across the country.
Henry originally thought she wanted to work in urban planning, according to the report, but began working in hospitals in high school and eventually became a medical assistant for the Red Cross.
"I was struck by how much the workers cared about their patients," she said to Modern Healthcare, "So I started working for a union that represented those workers."
She has been with SEIU for almost 30 years, always working to improve the quality of health care, which she says she sees as a ladder out of poverty.
