Demand for ophthalmic medical technicians has risen to the point where they will soon receive their own classification in the government's Occupational Outlook Handbook and other publications.

In a statement released this week by the Joint Commission on Allied Health Personnel in Opthalmology, the recent decision by the Bureau of Labor Statistics is hailed as a "historic milestone" for the profession.

"This is a significant measure of how much this profession has evolved into its own, and an empowering validation of this occupation's professional merit," said the president of the organization, Dr. William F. Astle.

Previously, these professionals had been categorized by the BLS in the same area as medical assistants, although ophthalmic medical technicians must undergo additional training.

Medical assistants are already projected to be among the fastest-growing job categories between now and 2016 by the BLS, with up to a 35 percent jump in demand for their skills. Along with enjoying career stability, medical assistants also acquire valuable healthcare experience that can set the stage for more specialized careers in other rapidly growing fields such as ophthalmology.

If you're interested in a medical assistant career, don't wait for the end of the recession. Now may be the ideal time to get started on a whole new career path.
