Medical assistants are likely to be in more demand than ever as federal stimulus funds begin making their way to struggling nonprofit local care centers.
This week, the Lexington (Kentucky) Courier-Journal profiled two federally funded health centers in the area that have applied for competitive federal stimulus grants. In total, the companies are said to be seeking about $1.2 million to hire eight new staff members over the next couple of years.
At Family Health Centers in Lexington, officials are reportedly hoping to add six new positions, including a physician, dentist, triage nurse and a medical assistant.
The newspaper added that the six new staff members would allow the facility to handle 2,100 new medical and 2,275 new dental patients each year.
Even in a recession, medical assistants are in demand at hospitals, doctors' offices and at care facilities such as these. Medical assistants also acquire skills that help them move on to new opportunities in the healthcare industry while helping others and enjoying career stability.
