Healthcare Jobs Hold Up Amid Rising Unemployment

Healthcare jobs, including medical assisting and other positions, continue to show their resiliency in the face of some of the worst unemployment figures in years.
This week, the Bureau of Labor Statistics released information showing that the nation's unemployment rate had jumped to 8.1 percent, with 651,000 jobs lost last year alone.
"We are staring into the abyss. The recession is intensifying and the economy is rapidly shrinking," Steven Wood of Insight Economics was quoted as saying in a USA Today report.
Despite all the lost jobs however, healthcare was the one industry that actually continued to add jobs last month. According to the BLS report, there were 27,000 new healthcare jobs created last month, with 16,000 created in ambulatory care and another 7,000 created at hospitals.
In contrast, fields like real estate lost 11,000 jobs, while the leisure and hospitality industry lost 33,000.
In light of the latest job figures, becoming a medical assistant looks like an increasingly sound move that should allow for considerable career stability. Medical assistants have enjoyed growing demand for their skills in recent years and this continues to be the case even in the current economy.
