A growing number of minority workers are finding new career opportunities as medical assistants and other health professionals despite one of the worst job markets in memory.

A report on BlackVoiceNews.com this week focuses on some minority workers in California, such as 35-year old Douglas Finley, who lost a construction job and is now training to become a medical assistant.

The report notes that historically, black workers and other minorities have been under-represented as healthcare professionals, particularly in the higher levels of the industry.

"If you're experienced and really good, you’ll get snatched up. I see a huge need for people of color or people competent with certain populations such as African-Americans, Spanish speaking Latinos and American Indians,” job consultant Jamie Bean told the website, which notes that some people have been able to land healthcare jobs in parts of California in just a single day.

Along with finding work as medical assistants, people of all races are also said to be successfully finding work as pharmacy technicians.

If pursuing a career as a medical assistant has been one of your goals, don't let the recession stop you from getting started. A wide variety of online medical assistant programs and classroom courses are available nationwide for this growing field.
