The economic crisis has pushed many people to consider retraining in a new career, such as becoming a certified medical assistant, after a layoff.

According to an article in The New York Times, Amy Sutton began a one-year program to become a medical assistant in January after the crash in the real estate market threatened her former career in real estate.

"I had gone a number of months without any income at all," she told the Times, "It was like having no job and no unemployment insurance."
Sutton decided to pursue a medical assistant career because she sees the job as "something where I could make a difference", and because of the high demand that exists - while hunting she saw how many medical assistant jobs were offered, according to the article. She said she would prefer to work in a physical rehabilitation center if possible.

Sutton is 55, with two children, but saw an opportunity to reinvent herself and pursue a new and rewarding career. If you are looking for a new direction, maybe this is the time to consider medical assisting.
