Motivated by a shortage of trained professionals, healthcare facilities everywhere are looking to attract a new generation of workers.

A recent report in the Wausau (Wisconsin) Daily Herald describes how 174 local high school students recently visited an area hospital for a job shadowing event. Students reportedly spent over two hours in a department that interested them, learning about a total of 17 medical and non-medical career options.

One 16-year old student told the newspaper that she was interested in becoming a medical assistant because of the various duties and procedures that they perform. She reportedly had the opportunity to watch medical staff insert a heart catheter into a patient and monitor readings.

While much has been made of the nationwide nursing shortage, fewer people might be aware that many hospitals have been struggling to fill openings for other positions such as medical assistants. The Bureau of Labor Statistics has projected strong demand for medical assistants and similar positions in the coming years.

If you're interested in training as a medical assistant, take some time to explore the various options that may be available to you.
