Demand for medical assistants and other healthcare professionals has reportedly been strong enough in many parts of the country to lead to the growth of new private schools offering certification classes.
A recent report in the San Francisco Chronicle notes that these private schools are usually more expensive than their public counterparts, but also tend to offer flexible hours and don't have waiting lists.
The newspaper notes that medical assisting is generally categorized as an allied health profession, which also includes phlebotomists and laboratory technicians. All of these positions have become increasingly attractive to people who were laid off from other industries or are simply seeking new career paths. Overall, the healthcare industry reportedly added 30,000 jobs nationwide in December, at a time when most other industries were scaling back sharply.
"We've seen an increase across the board in applicants, and we've certainly seen more qualified applicants," the newspaper quoted Linda Squires Grohe, dean of City College of San Francisco's School of Health and Physical Education, as saying.
